Codeine Addiction Treatment & Rehab
Codeine often comes from a familiar place: a cough syrup prescription, or a pain prescription after a dental procedure. Because it feels like everyday medicine, it’s easy to keep reaching for it long after the cough or pain is gone.
Part of Monterey Bay Recovery’s prescription drug addiction care services includes codeine addiction treatment, which includes medically supervised detox and residential care in a resort-style, private 6-bed home in the Monterey hills.

From Cough Syrup to Dependence
Codeine is an opioid prescribed for pain and, in some syrups, for coughs. With regular use, tolerance builds: the same dose does less, so it’s easy to take more, more often. Over time, that pattern can become codeine addiction.
Some prescription cough syrups pair codeine with promethazine, a sedative. Mixed with soda and sipped in large amounts, it’s known as “lean,” and lean addiction can slow breathing to dangerous levels, especially with alcohol.
Codeine Recovery Support That Doesn’t End at Detox
The first days are about getting comfortable and stable. After that, you stay on to work through cravings, triggers, and a plan for life at home.
Codeine Rehab Might Be the Right Choice If…
- You’re refilling early or getting cough syrup from more than one source.
- You’ve mixed codeine with soda, alcohol, or other drugs.
- You use it to relax or sleep, not just for pain or a cough.
- You feel achy, restless, or sick when you go without.
- You’ve tried to stop and keep going back.
Recognizing even one of these is worth a conversation about codeine addiction treatment.
What Codeine Withdrawal Looks Like
Withdrawal usually follows a familiar arc:
First day: restlessness, yawning, a runny nose, and muscle aches begin.
Days 2 to 4: symptoms usually peak, with sweating, stomach upset, poor sleep, and strong cravings.
After that: physical symptoms ease, though sleep and cravings can take longer to settle.
Codeine rehab at Monterey Bay Recovery is part of our detox program with 24/7 medical care. The team tracks your symptoms closely and steps in early, so the hardest days stay manageable.
What to Expect From Codeine Addiction Treatment
After codeine detox, you move straight into residential treatment with the same team. Your days include individual and group therapy, evidence-based approaches like DBT and EMDR, and relapse prevention built around your real-life triggers.
We also look at what’s underneath, like stress, chronic pain, or underlying anxiety or depression, and help you build healthier ways to cope.

FAQs About Codeine Addiction Treatment
Is codeine an opioid?
Yes. Codeine comes from the opium poppy, like morphine, and it carries the same risks of tolerance and withdrawal as other opioids.
Why does codeine affect everyone differently?
Your liver converts part of each dose into morphine, and your genes control how fast that happens. Some bodies convert it very quickly, which can cause dangerous side effects even at normal doses.
Is Tylenol with codeine addictive?
It can be. Tylenol #3 and #4 combine codeine with acetaminophen, so taking more than prescribed also puts your liver at risk.
Will I need medication during withdrawal?
Not always. When it’s clinically appropriate, our medical team may use medication to ease codeine withdrawal and cravings, based on your health and history.
Do you work with college students and young professionals?
Yes. We offer support tailored to college students and working professionals, and we keep treatment private so you can return to school or work with confidence.
What happens when I call?
You’ll talk with a real person on our admissions team. They’ll ask about your situation, explain what treatment involves, and help with insurance and timing, often starting intake the same day.
